Fernet Branca
Fernet Branca
Fernet was introduced to Argentina by Italians during the European immigration wave to the country in the late 19th century. Fernet-Branca is by far the most popular brand in the country, leading the market and reaching a “mythical” status among Argentinians.
Fernet is a type of amaro, a bitter and aromatic spirit, made out of different herbs and spices which varies according to the brand. It usually contains myrrh, rhubarb, camomile, cardamom, aloe and especially saffron, with a base of grape distilled spirits.
Fernet-Branca is commonly mixed with Coke, a mixed drink known as “Fernet con Coca” (Spanish for “Fernet and Coke”) or Fernando. It can also be mixed into cocktails, though the strong taste can overwhelm other ingredients. It can replace bitters in recipes, for instance, the Fanciulli cocktail is a Manhattan with fernet instead of Angostura bitters.
